Beyond Certificates and Marketing Claims

Sustainability certificates are everywhere these days. Almost every company claims sustainability as part of their business mode, because sustainability sells. Unfortunately, these claims are often misleading or superficial, especially when the nature of the products contradicts the sustainability narrative. For example, British Petroleum heavily invests in oil and gas exploration despite their sustainability branding. Similarly, H&M markets its “Conscious Collection” as sustainable, but the fast fashion model itself remains inherently unsustainable due to overproduction, waste, and reliance on low-quality materials.

This raises questions about the reliability of sustainability certificates. A thriving industry has emerged around providing companies with green credentials, but how meaningful are these labels in the bigger picture?

Another overlooked issue is the long-term impact of seemingly ethical products. For instance, plant-based meats, while marketed as environmentally friendly, are often highly processed and filled with additives, stabilizers, and artificial flavors. Similarly, the rising use of smart devices has sparked debates about their negative impact on young children’s development.

At LUO-light, we share these concerns. While we recognize the necessity of acquiring sustainability certifications to meet market demands, we prefer to let our environmentally conscious practices speak for themselves. Our commitment is reflected in the use of renewable and recycled materials, compact and lightweight designs, and a production-on-demand model to minimize waste.

Finally, our products do more than meet environmental standards—they enhance well-being. Our modular lighting systems empower users to shape their light according to their needs, promoting mental wellness and creating spaces that truly feel like their own.
