Die Schildbürger is a collection of humorous folk tales- first published in 1597. The people of Schilda a fictional place repeatedly create problems through their strange and absurd ideas, then try to solve them in even more funny ways. One of the episodes describe how the people of Schilda build a new town hall. They forget to add windows, with the result that the building is completely dark inside. They find a solution they decide to bring light into the town hall with buckets, sacks, and baskets. No matter how many times they try, the inside stays dark.

The luminaire can serve as atmospheric, accent, or functional lighting, depending on how far the lid is opened. When the lid is closed, light permeates the layered structure in three different ways: through direct emission, diffuse reflection, and transmission. The interplay of these modes gives the light its changing character, with its perceived tone ranging from cool to warm. When the light is filtered and changes to a warm, soft glow it reminds of a camp fire. When it is directed against a wall it creates vertical accent light.

KAJO acts as a vessel for illumination: when its front is opened, light flows outward as effortlessly as water poured from a pitcher and light turns on to its full brightness, making it ideal for reading or handwork.

Kajo has a touch-sensitive dimmer that allows an intuitive adjustment of the brightness. All electronic components, including the LED module, remain easily accessible for repair, maintenance, or future upgrades.

Kajo is powered by an ordinary USB-C charger, or it is connectable to any laptop.
